UPS to open sorting facility at Tampa International Airport

The facility will roughly double the space UPS currently uses at the airport, a TPA spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive.

Construction will span across 18 acres on the east side of the airport, and the project includes an aircraft parking ramp and an expanded taxilane to be shared with neighboring FedEx, according to the release. UPS’ complex will also feature truck courts, trailer parking and an employee parking lot.

How Chief Operating Officers are Achieving Results with Supply Chain Software

As a former Chief Operating Officer (COO), overseeing Kaizen events, value-stream mapping analysis, upgrading ERP systems, and implementing customer success programs, I recall how easy it was for functional leaders to get bogged down in their own imperatives and lose sight of the big picture.

Individual silo objectives can inadvertently be at cross purposes with others – most commonly between sales and operations. To meet a revenue goal, sales teams may commit to deals that the operations team is unaware of or hasn’t bought into.

Policies might be flexed to drive more short-term volume, making the rest of the company strain on meeting the increased demand. These knee-jerk reactions then ripple throughout the supply base causing consternation.

As oil market braces for higher prices, diesel benchmark drops again

With the benchmark price used for most fuel surcharges dropping for a ninth consecutive week, diesel buyers might want to savor the decline while they can. With the shocking news that hit oil markets over the weekend, the future course is likely to be higher.

The Department of Energy/Energy Information Administration average weekly retail diesel price effective Monday was $4.105 a gallon, a decline of 2.3 cents. The price is now down $1.236 a gallon since its most recent high of $5.341 a gallon on Oct. 24. Prices have declined in 19 of the 23 weeks after that.

The DOE/EIA price also is down $1.705 a gallon from its all-time high of $5.81 on June 20.

But on the same day the decline was posted, futures prices across the oil complex soared on the unexpected news over the weekend that the OPEC+ group, which includes OPEC and a group of non-OPEC oil exporters led by Russia, had agreed to cut output by 1 million barrels a day. The reductions are to go into effect in May and last through the year.

Nato’s border with Russia doubles as Finland joins

The Finnish foreign minister handed the accession document to the US secretary of state who declared Finland a member.

Then in bright sunshine in front of Nato’s gleaming new headquarters, Finland’s white-and-blue flag joined a circle of 30 other flags.

Finland’s accession is a setback for Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

He had repeatedly complained of Nato’s expansion before his full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said by attacking his neighbour, the Russian leader had triggered exactly what he had sought to prevent.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Russia would be “watching closely” what happens in Finland, describing Nato’s enlargement as a “violation of our security and our national interests”.
